The Magic Field

Imagine a wondrous field in which grow the most remarkable medicinal plants that can cure some of the harshest of human ailments, including leukemia … Lymphoma …
Now, imagine you can just step into this incredible field and freely pick as many of the priceless plants as you want. The only requirement is an appropriate basket that will allow you to harvest your pickings and store them until you can deliver them to the sick people who are desperately awaiting them.

Well, the field is real enough – it's the delivery rooms at every hospital. The miraculous harvest is the stem-cells that are found in the umbilical cord. Until a few years ago, before science realized the explosive potential, the cords and the precious blood were summarily discarded as garbage …
… today, almost all the cords still wind up in the garbage! Not because their potential isn't recognized, but for lack of "baskets" to reap the fantastic harvest that will allow the gathering, processing and storing the stem cells until they can be given to the desperate patients.

This is why Bedomaich Chayi – Hebrew for "Your blood will grant you life" – was created.

The Magic Harvest

Stem cells are primordial cells before passing the final transformation into becoming the type of cells they will become. This enables them to transform to any type of cell. Until not long ago, implanted stem cells were taken from bone marrow, but cord blood is a far superior source. Implants of stem cells have revolutionized treatment of diseases such as leukemia, Fanconi’s anemia and many more. Perhaps, in the future stem cells will open up new vistas of cure to diabetes and heart and liver diseases, as well as spinal injuries. However, these medical directions are still in preliminary research only.

Umbilical-source stem cells significantly widen the base of potential donors. Stem cells do not suffer from diseases and defects that other cells acquire during a lifetime in the body. Since the fetus has yet to fully develop its immune system, implant stem cells pose less risk for post-transplant complications. Additionally, harvesting stem cells is a totally non-invasive and painless procedure to both mother and baby. For all these reasons, the use of stem cells prevents the need to locate donors and all but eliminates the usual time that patients must wait until a suitable donor is found – time that far too many patients can ill afford.

Much More Than "Another Cord Blood Bank"

As many as 76% of stem-cell implant patients find a suitable donor, but Jews, being a relatively small ethnic group, face far greater difficulties. Within the Jewish nation itself there are differing odds as well. Since most stem cell reservoirs are in Western countries, Jews of Ashkenazi descent have a far greater chance to find a suitable donor than Sephardi Jews. The chance of finding a donor for Jews of mixed ethnic lineage is even lower!

This is why Bedomaich Chayi is so vital.

Life for All

Bedomaich Chayi was established to give a solution to populations at risk as a result of lack of donors. It should be pointed out that though Bedomaich Chayi concentrates on collecting cord blood of populations who pose the greatest need, the collected samples are given away to anyone in need anywhere in the world regardless of sex, religion or race. And this is where friends of Bedomaich Chayi come in.

Love Saves Life

The cost of collecting, processing, storing and delivering stem cells to patients suffering from catastrophic diseases worldwide is extremely high. Bedomaich Chayi’s non-profit mandate dictates that the prohibitive cost of procuring stem cells isn't passed along to the patients. On the mother, who donate the cord blood, obviously that there is no charge. Instead, the organization relies on the loving generosity of its friends to enable its blessed, life-saving activity.
Without you, many patients will continue to wait for stem-cell transplants – many dying while waiting – while countless priceless umbilical cords are discarded unharvested every single day.
With you, countless patients the world over and their families will receive a gift of hope, joy and life.

All that's needed for this miracle to happen is for you to say "Yes!"

The public cord blood bank "Bedomayich Chayi" was founded as a humanitarian universal voluntary organization. Our goal is to provide bone marrow transplants to those who are not represented by public international cord blood banks. In addition, we provide a parent's guide with all the necessary information about the cord blood and its donation. All data is for informative purposes only. A doctor should be consulted for medical guidance.
