Project Hodaya | Bedomaich Chayi | Public Cord Blood Bank

It was March 2010 (Adar 5770) and Hodaya's life was hanging in the balance.
Hodaya is a 22 year old woman from a Jerusalem suburb who suffers from acute leukemia and is being treated at the Bone Marrow Transplant Ward in Hadassa Medical Center.
For over a year a search for a match is on, but nothing has been found. As a a person of Cochin-Indian descent, Hodaya has a very slim chance of finding a suitable donor. The search in all international registries didn't turn anything up. Professor Reuven Or, Department Head explains that Hodaya's genetic profile and tissue typing are very rare and the best chance at finding her a match would be to get a cord blood donation from someone of her population. Cord blood donations of the Cochin population were needed in order to save Hodaya's life. This would give Hodaya a chance at life!
Project Hodaya was born, the first of its kind.
The ICBB, the Israel Cord Blood Bank – a non-profit organization for public cord blood banks in Israel, Hadassa Ein Kerem Medical Center, Magen David Adom's cord blood bank and the public cord blood bank Bedomaich Chayi have banded together with all Israeli maternity hospitals, working in cooperation to the success of the mission.
Articles appear in relevant print and internet media calling upon expectant mothers, where one of the parents are from Cochin-Indian descent (or Latvian/Georgian/Ukrainian) to donate cord blood to the public bank and give Hodaya a chance for finding a match.
Under the project, mothers contact the project's hotline in order to coordinate their donation. Some of the pregnant women and their partners were tested for tissue typing in order to get a picture of the odds of the match in advance.
The mothers receive information regarding the donation along with a kit for the collection of the cord blood.
At the time of birth, a trained 'collector' from one of the public cord blood banks accompanies the mother in order to make the collection immediately after birth. It's important to note that there's no danger of discomfort in the donation of cord blood. The collected blood is sent to a cord blood lab where it is processed for stem cell extraction and cyropreserved, (deep freeze at -196 degrees in liquid nitrogen). Blood samples are sent to the Tissue Typing Lab in Hadassa to be checked for a match. All units donated during Project Hodaya are added to the public cord blood banks in Israel.
Up to now, the Project Hodaya Statistics are: (Subtotal)
328 calls to the hotline
85 expectant mothers fit the donation criteria
42 units of cord blood collected as of now
