Rabbinical Stance | Bedomaich Chayi | Cord Blood Bank
Donating umbilical cord blood to a public blood bank is a fulfillment of the great mitzvah of giving charity and saving lives.
Leading Rabbis and Poskim signed a public appeal, calling upon expecting mothers to donate their umbilical cord blood, and urging wealthy people to assist with the development and enlargement of the public cord blood bank, Bedomaich Chayi. The Rabbis expressed their appreciation and enthusiastic support of the bank and the people behind it
Rabbinical guidelines regarding cord blood:
• There is no Halachic problem whatsoever regarding the donation of umbilical cord blood.
• Cord blood may not be collected on Shabbat.
• In cases where cord blood is collected for a specific patient, a Halachic authority should be consulted for each individual case.
• It is a tremendous Mitzvah to donate to and support the Bedomaich Chayi public cord blood bank.
In their appeal, the distinguished Rabbi bless the expecting mothers, wishing them joy and happiness from their offspring, and conclude, "May it be Hashem's will to remove all illness from among us in fulfillment of the verse, "For I am Hashem, your healer" (Deuteronomy, 15:16).
"Whoever saves a single life is akin to having saved the entire world".
