The Shield of the Ministry of Health for 2010
The Shield of the Ministry of Health for year 2010 - was awarded to the Board of ICBB in the Knesset
The Shield of the Ministry of Health for those excelling in the medical system, is presented every year to six groups or organizations as well as six public figures, who have left their mark with unparalleled activism and donated a unique donation to the welfare and health of the Israeli and general public. The ceremony took place in the Knesset, with a large and influential crowd present, on January 11, 2011.
The National Council for Volunteering in Israel and the Ministry of Health chose our suggestion, from amongst hundreds of nominees, to present this prestigious award to the Board of ICBB, headed by Mrs. Shelly Kapusta, for their outstanding work; having the Cord Blood Bank Law passed, promoting the approval of regulations, as well as procuring government funding and raising public awareness of the necessity of public cord blood banks in order to save lives.
Recommendations from the following people were included in the nomination:
Professor Gideon Bach – Medical Director of Bedomaich Chayi Cord Blood Bank.
Professor Reuven Or - Head of the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cancer Immunotherapy.
Mr. Zeev Bielski – MK, member of the Social Welfare, Labor and Health committees of the Knesset.
Extract from the explanation for the award: “The Ministry Shield is presented to the organization for her blessed activism which constitutes an anchor and a window of hope to hundreds of leukemia patients, as well as those sick with genetic diseases, whose only hope is a cord blood transplant.” Thanks to the organization’s efforts, a law was passed in the Knesset this past July whereby the government will allocate an annual sum of NIS 3 million to enlarge public cord blood banks which will be available to the public at no cost. This month, the Treasury has transferred the first payment as applies to the new law, which will enable growth of about 600 units a year.
Shelly Kapusta, Executive Director: “The Cord Blood Bank Law is an important step but just a first in the establishment of a large public bank, which will be able to provide a suitable solution to the hundreds of patients who need a bone marrow transplant every year in order to save their life. The Health Ministry Committee is currently deliberating the needs and specifications and I hope that they will recommend increasing their financial support significantly”.
